Industries turn to Internet and technology to provide services – population has mixed feelings

Entrepreneurs constantly seek out and/or create new ventures, ideas, and enterprises. They are challenged and thrive on seeing the next greatest and latest before it becomes the norm and mainstream. They take it upon themselves to weigh risks, advantages, disadvantages, commitment, resources, and outcome.

Entrepreneurs take advantage of the latest in Internet technologies and tools. Many fields and industries are turning to the Internet to offer better services at lower costs. Some of these industries include banking, government, and medical. Here are some pros and cons that entrepreneurs must weigh when considering whether or not to move into new ventures and ideas regarding industries turning to technology:

Bank of America, for example, is now taking the lead in Internet banking. This helps cut costs such as having to hire and maintain less staff. Bank customers are encouraged to use the ATM for just about everything. In fact, if customers have a free online account and do not pay a monthly service charge then they can be penalized for getting assistance at the bank counter.

In other words, unless the assistance is approved (such as needing to withdraw a balance that is over their daily ATM’s withdrawal limit), the customer will be charged a fee for getting help from a human. Some say this is a good thing in helping to keep costs down as the economy is quite challenging. Others are quite frustrated and feel that customer service is decreased.

Bank customers seem to be mixed about all this online banking. They are concerned about such potential issues as bank fraud, identity theft, and even a chip planted into ATMs to capture their information. They fear someone looking over their shoulder to see their PIN or using cell phones and smart phones to capture their PIN and debit card images. Others feel that they are not capable of all this technology. Many senior citizens feel lost in the fast paced world.

Yet others feel that the digital and online banking is successful in other parts of the world and it is about time that the United States caught on. They believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. These people are thankful for the free banking and lower costs that the Internet and technology is offering them.

Another area that is rapidly incorporating the Internet and technology is the medical field. Electronic health records are now kept compared to a few years ago where medical staff would hand write or type information on forms and documents. Then these would be placed in folders and filed into filing cabinets. Nowadays it is not unusual to see computers in front of medical staff members faces as they type everything into data systems and computer programs. Doctors are also seen having to type in new patients’ information as well as all patients notes on their laptops.

As required by law, patients have the right to see their medical records including the notes that physicians write about them. However, hospitals and clinics do not make it easy for people to access these notes. Nowutomated text messaging programs are now available and can send patients reminders of their next appointment. Websites and emails can deliver reminders as well as specific notes about and to the patients.

With the use of websites, webcams, and other electronic and technological devices, patients can even log in and view photos of their surgeries. They can also take pictures of their recovery and healing processes to send them back so that healthcare staff can keep tabs on how they are doing.

There are mixed feelings and concerns about all this technology and the giving away of information and data. Some doctors and nurses as well as health staff worry that patients will be upset that, for example, a doctor has written that the patient is “grotesquely obese”. Yet others believe it is a good motivator and reminder for people to see what really is being noted and recorded about them. Many people feel that the human touch is being lost and they are not getting the personal care that they used to. Yet others believe that the Internet and technology will provide better medical care and customer service and also help to keep costs down at the same time.

It seems that the world is going the way of Internet and technology whether one embraces it or not. Entrepreneurs must do their homework well in order to come up with the best ideas, solutions, and ventures as they do what they passionately love to do.
