How You Can Help the Environment Every Day Not Only on World Environment Day

World Environment Day was June 5th, and this year’s theme was “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”. The world celebrated the diversity of life on Earth as part of 2010’s International Year of Biodiversity.

The celebrations began in 1972 and has grown to be one of the main mediums through which the UN has offered awareness worldwide, of the environment and encourages the attention and action of politicians.

Through World Environment Day, the UN Environment Program has been able to bring environmental issues to the forefront and allows the world to realize that protecting the environment is not only their responsibility, but is also in their power to make a change. We can become representatives for change in support of sustainable earth friendly development. It is is also where people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

This year’s global host was Rwanda, which is a country with extraordinary biodiversity. The country has made incredible progress on environmental protection. They headed worldwide celebrations with three days of theme events.

Thousands of activities were held, including beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and so much more.

The first thing we can do to make the planet a better place to live and continue World Environment day every single day is to treasure and protect the environment we live in. We can help out by volunteering our time to help sanitation workers by picking up trash. We all need to realize how important it is to keep the earth clean by helping to clean it up personally. This way we are aware that to love the environment is to clean up our neighbourhoods.

We can also act as ambassadors by standing up and speaking about our knowledge of environmental protection. This will not only be praised by your community, but also be supported by anyone who hears you. There is nothing like getting the word out to many people at one time. We need to find an event in our communities and do our part to improve environmental protection awareness and make it global.

We can even do something symbolic. If we plant a tree, although if it isn’t Arbour Day, that will help the environment for future generations. Take a tour of a chemical plant, although this takes much planning and permission, and give the executives there some suggestions for reducing or even eliminating pollution emission.

Don’t hold back, and live up to the theme of this World Environment Day year round. You will be proud of what you have done.

Everyone counts and World Environment Day needs everyone to help make this happen continuously. You can organize a neighbourhood clean-up, start using cloth bags instead of plastic, and encourage your community to do the same, plant a tree or organize a neighbourhood tree planting event; perhaps you could walk to work, or even start a recycling drive . There is so much you can do to help.

World Environment Day is not the only day people need to take action for the Earth. Every day everyone should do their part to help clean the environment. Even by doing small things like recycling or planting a tree or driving less would make a world of difference in greening up our Earth. Please do your part!
